Provider, Avril Swan, MD

How can I say this without sounding like a groupie? Dr. Swan is not only the single best doctor I have ever encountered in my life, but she is also one of the finest human beings I have ever met.

Avril Swan, MD

Dr. Avril Swan began practicing medicine in California in 2000 and is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. She graduated from Mayo Medical School and completed her residency at UCSF. Dr. Swan joined Dr. Miller in 2003 and since that time has developed her interest in integrating traditional western medicine with alternative modalities. She has completed continuing education in nutrition, physician acupuncture, integrative medicine, and  Hand-in-Hand Parenting. Dr. Swan completed her fellowship in Medical Education through the University of California, San Francisco, and teaches family medicine to UCSF medical students. She is the director of the UCSF Medical Student clinic at WholeFamily MD. Dr. Swan’s style is strongly collaborative and based on the belief that given education and support, people can make intelligent decisions about their own health care. She works with patients to understand their stressors and state of mind. She explores and evaluates environment, exercise, and nutrition.  She believes that the whole picture is important when evaluating an individual’s health concerns. Dr. Swan works directly with patients as partners and when appropriate, brings in a network of San Francisco specialists such as medical doctors, physical therapists, acupuncturists, and nutritionists – whoever and whatever it takes to help guide her patients to a holistic solution for current problems or to prevent future problems. Dr. Swan sees patients of all ages with a range of needs, including preventative care as well as urgent and chronic concerns. She sees a large number of children as a part of her pediatric practice. She provides home visits for newborns.  For her adult patients, she frequently addresses issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, hormonal changes, hypothyroidism, autoimmune problems, chronic pain, eating disorders and depression. Dr. Swan grew up and went to public school in San Francisco. She is a mother to three wonderful daughters, and she is married to Stuart, an English and Social Sciences teacher in the SFUSD.
