Alex Zaphiris, MD, MS

Dr. Alex Zaphiris is a graduate of the UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program and the UCSF School of Medicine. She completed a 2-year Integrative Medicine Fellowship with Dr. Andrew Weil and is triple board-certified in Family Medicine, Integrative Medicine, and Addiction Medicine.

Dr. Zaphiris first joined WholeFamily MD in 2009 and is happy to be back. She is sought out by patients who are motivated to use integrative approaches to prevent and treat a wide variety of medical issues, including depression, anxiety, hypothyroidism, hormonal issues, GI issues including SIBO, autoimmune disease, back and neck pain, mast cell activation syndrome, drug and alcohol addiction, especially opiate addiction, and other complex medical issues that don’t easily fit into one box.

The origins of her practice were sparked by a personal health crisis involving chronic low back pain after a car accident. She left a career in the film industry to become the kind of doctor she most wanted for herself. In the years since graduating from medical school, her curious mind and her patients’ complex health challenges have caused her to dig deeper, beyond conventional medicine, to develop an integrative medical practice focused on bringing together the best of Western and alternative medicine to help patients restore and optimize their health.

Dr. Zaphiris is well-trained in a variety of approaches that are individualized for each patient including: Western medicine, nutrition, supplements, osteopathic manual medicine, mind-body approaches, ear acupuncture, and functional medicine. She enjoys collaborative relationships with patients and refers to a wide network of San Francisco and Marin medical and integrative specialists to help her patients get the care and treatment they need.

As Clinical Faculty at UCSF in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Dr. Zaphiris enjoys teaching the next generation of medical students. She is on staff at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.

Dr. Zaphiris grew up in New York and transplanted to California for college at UCLA. She lives in Marin with her husband, mountain bike pioneer, Gary Fisher, and 2 young children.
